Chimney sweep logs do not sweep chimneys. They loosen some creosote - which then falls where a brush and vacuum still have to collect it.
Famco Chimney Cap Installation: The Long Beach Owner’s Guide
Famco chimney cap installation in Long Beach typically runs $285 to $540 for most standard single-flue caps, including the cap, installation hardware, sealant, and labor. Our techs stock the most common Famco-compatible cap sizes on the truck, so a straightforward swap is usually done in one visit. Most Long Beach owners discover their cap failed after a storm blows it loose, or when they spot rust streaks running down the chimney chase, or when rain starts dripping into the firebox during a winter storm.
If you have a Famco cap that has rusted out at the base, lost its screen, or started lifting in Long Beach’s ocean wind, this page covers what you need to know about replacement. We are an independent chimney service company in Long Beach and are not affiliated with Famco or its distributors. We install their caps and compatible equivalents because they hold up better than the generic caps most box stores carry, and because the mounting brackets are built to match factory flue dimensions rather than relying on a homeowner to guess.
Which Famco Models This Applies To
Famco makes a few different cap lines and the failure pattern tends to differ by model. The stainless steel single-flue caps with the standard 3/4-inch mesh screen are the ones we replace most often in Long Beach. The galvanized versions corrode faster near the coast; we rarely recommend them here. The multi-flue caps with the wider mounting channels are less common in older Long Beach chimneys, but we do see them on newer builds and on homes that have been retrofitted with two flues side by side.
The critical measurement is the outside dimension of your flue tile or the inside dimension of a round liner. Famco caps come in sizes that break down by these measurements, not by fireplace brand or fireplace model. So while many stores ask what fireplace you have, the part that matters is the number written on the flue tile or the sticker inside the cap base if it has not faded. On Long Beach chimneys with two flues, the most common mistake we see is measuring one flue and assuming the other is the same. They usually are not. If the flues are offset, the second cap must be sized independently.
On the OEM versus aftermarket question: Famco is itself an aftermarket cap maker, so choosing a new cap is less about matching a factory part and more about matching the flue dimensions and the cap’s retention method. A quality replacement cap with a steel base ring and welded screen that uses the same mounting style will perform as well as a Famco original in our experience. What does not perform as well is the adjustable universal cap with the bent tabs and zip screws, which salt air eats through in a season or two near the beach.

Signs Your Famco Chimney Cap Installation Is Failing
- Rust at the screen or base ring. This is the first visible failure in Long Beach because of airborne salt. The screen is usually the thinnest steel on the cap. Once the screen rots through, birds can enter the flue, and the cap is structurally on borrowed time.
- Cap lifting or shifting on the flue. The high wind events off the Long Beach shoreline eventually work cap screws loose. A cap that is even slightly angled allows wind-driven rain to angle into the flue instead of across the cap hood.
- Dripping or staining inside the firebox after rain. Your damper may be closed and your chimney may have no liner issues, but rain still finds its way in because the cap is no longer shedding water outward. This is often misdiagnosed as a flashing leak.
- You hear or see birds in the chimney. Once the mesh screen is breached, birds nest in the flue in the spring. In Long Beach, starlings and sparrows are the usual culprits. The nest blocks the draft and can smolder when the fireplace is used.
- Strong smell of smoke or soot inside the house. A failed cap does not just keep water out. It also directs the rising draft to funnel away from the flue opening. When the hood is bent or missing, the draft can stall, and smoke finds the path of least resistance through the home.

AfterReplacement Cost & What’s Included
Installed Famco chimney cap replacement in Long Beach generally runs between $285 and $540. The range reflects the cap size, whether the flue is round or square, whether the masonry crown needs spot sealing before the new cap mounts, and whether we are working from the roof or on a steep chase on a two-story home.
The quote covers the cap itself, all hardware, sealant, and labor. There is no separate trip charge or parts markup on top of the listed number. If we find that the crown needs more than light sealing, we will show you photos and give you a separate written number before touching that work. You do not approve it and it does not get done.
Our work carries the 365-Day Done Right Promise: a written one-year guarantee on the installation. If the cap loosens, leaks, or fails within that year, we return at no charge and fix it. That guarantee covers what we installed, not damage from a falling tree limb or a reroofing crew. The Garrison Standard applies here as it does on every Flint Chimney Sweep job: the price is in writing before the first tool comes off the truck, and the invoice matches the approval.
DIY or Call Us?
What you can safely check from the ground: whether the cap is visibly tilted, whether the screen is intact, and whether rust is streaking down the flue or chase. Binoculars from the sidewalk can tell you a lot. What you should not do is go up a ladder on a two-story Long Beach roof with an angle grinder and a tube of sealant to dig a stubborn cap bolt out of a cracked crown. Most cap replacements on Long Beach houses require roof access with tie-offs, and on beachfront or hillside properties the fall risk is real. This is one of those jobs where the cost of a pro is mostly buying safer access.
If you need it replaced and want it done in one visit, call (562) 317-7262. We arrive with the cap, the hardware, and the right ladder for your roof pitch. Clean flue, honest report, that’s the whole job.
FAQs
A stainless steel Famco or Famco-equivalent cap on a Long Beach chimney typically lasts 8 to 15 years before screen degradation or hardware failure. Galvanized caps near the coast reliably last 3 to 6 years before rust-through. The screen, not the hood, is what fails first. If the hood is intact but the screen is rotted, you may still be able to replace just the screen on some Famco models, though for many homeowners the cost difference makes a full cap swap the better call. Call (562) 317-7262 and we can quote both options from a photo.
Sometimes. A loose cap can often be re-secured with new hardware, and a small screen tear can sometimes be patched with a screen repair kit if the remaining steel is sound. But if the cap base is rusted through, the mounting ring has warped, or the screen has failed in more than one spot, replacement is the more honest fix for a Long Beach chimney. Hank Delano’s rule on this is simple: if the repaired cap lasts less than three years, replace it and move on.
A standard one-flue replacement takes about one hour from setup to cleanup. A two-flue multi-cap replacement, or a job needing light crown repair, can run two to three hours. We carry common sizes on the truck, so the typical Long Beach job does not need a return visit.
We stock the most common stainless steel Famco-compatible cap sizes on our trucks, including the standard square and round flue configurations used across Long Beach homes. For unusual sizes or multi-flue chase caps, we order from our chimney trade suppliers and typically share ETA and exact installed price within a day. Flint Chimney Sweep also works with professional-grade lines from DuraFlex, HeatShield, and Gelco when a job calls for something beyond a standard cap replacement.
