Chimney sweep logs do not sweep chimneys. They loosen some creosote - which then falls where a brush and vacuum still have to collect it.
Gelco Crown Repair: The Long Beach Owner’s Guide
We stock Gelco-compatible crown repair parts on our trucks and install them throughout Long Beach, typically for $425 to $780 depending on crown size, crack severity, and whether we’re sealing, resurfacing, or rebuilding. Most Gelco crown repairs take 1 to 2 hours on site, and we carry the materials to handle it in a single visit.
Most Long Beach homeowners discover a failing Gelco crown the hard way: a water stain on the ceiling near the fireplace, a musty smell after rain, or spalling (flaking) concrete showing up on the roof around the chimney. The crown is the concrete or mortar cap that sits on top of the chimney and sheds water away from the flue. When it cracks, water gets in, and every wet winter in Long Beach makes it worse.
Which Gelco Models This Applies To
Gelco manufactures crowns and chase covers for both masonry chimneys and factory-built (prefab) fireplace systems. If your chimney is brick or block with a poured concrete crown, you’re looking at a mortar-based repair or a Gelco CrownSaver-style cap. If you have a factory-built fireplace with a metal chase, Gelco supplies galvanized and stainless steel chase covers that bolt onto the top of the chase and take the place of a traditional crown.
The compatibility gotcha that trips up most owners: Gelco chase covers are not universal. They’re cut to the outside dimensions of your chase, measured in inches, and the flue opening is positioned to match your specific vent pipe. We measure the chase top and flue placement before ordering, because a cover that’s off by half an inch won’t seat or seal correctly. When the original Gelco part is still available, we quote it. When it’s discontinued or backordered, we use quality aftermarket equivalents from the trade brands we already work with, like DuraFlex and HeatShield, and we tell you which one we’re using and why, in writing, before any work starts.
Flint Chimney Co Long Beach is an independent chimney service company. We are not affiliated with Gelco, and we don’t pretend to be. But we work with their parts every season, and we know how they fail in coastal Southern California weather.

Signs Your Gelco Crown Repair Is Failing
- Hairline cracks in the crown surface. These start small, then widen each winter as rainwater seeps in and the temperature swings cause the concrete to expand and contract. Left alone, those cracks become channels for water into the chimney chase or masonry.
- Spalling concrete or mortar on the crown edges. Flaking, crumbling, or pieces of the crown showing up on the roof or in the gutter means the crown is actively shedding material. This is common in Long Beach neighborhoods close to the water, where salt air accelerates surface wear.
- Water stains on the ceiling or walls near the fireplace. By the time water shows up inside the house, the crown has been failing for a while. The moisture traveled down the chase or through the masonry before finding a path into the living space.
- Rust streaks running down the side of a metal chase. On factory-built Gelco systems, rust streaks usually mean the chase cover has pinholes or the seams are letting water through. Galvanized covers in Long Beach’s salt air typically last 8 to 12 years; stainless holds longer.
- Musty or damp smell near the fireplace after rain. This is the sign most owners notice before they see any actual water. It’s the smell of moisture trapped inside the chimney system, and it won’t fix itself.

AfterReplacement Cost & What’s Included
Here’s what you can expect to pay in Long Beach for Gelco crown repair:
- Crown sealing (minor cracks): $425 to $550. We clean the crown, fill the cracks with a flexible sealant rated for chimney exposure, and apply a water-repellent coat.
- Crown resurfacing (moderate wear): $550 to $680. We apply a new layer of crown-coat material over the existing concrete to restore the surface and slope.
- Crown rebuild or Gelco chase cover replacement: $680 to $780. Covers are measured, ordered to your chase dimensions, and installed with a new gasket and stainless fasteners.
Every price includes the parts, labor, site cleanup, and a written guarantee valid for one full year. If a covered repair fails within that year, we return at no charge. The invoice shows the part cost and the labor cost as separate line items, because you should know exactly what you’re paying for before you approve anything.
DIY or Call Us?
There’s a safe middle ground. If you have roof access and a good ladder, you can look at the crown yourself: check for visible cracks, flaking edges, or rust on the chase cover. Take pictures from a few angles. That tells you whether something’s wrong.
What you shouldn’t do is patch it with hardware-store caulk or roofing tar. Crowns expand, contract, and face direct sun plus salt air in Long Beach. The wrong sealant cracks within a season, and a sloppy patch job can trap water and make the damage worse. This is also roof-edge and ladder work on crews we train for. If you’re not comfortable on a roof, don’t be. Call (562) 317-7262 and we’ll send a uniformed, background-checked technician to look at it.
FAQs
A properly sealed or resurfaced Gelco crown typically lasts 8 to 15 years in Long Beach’s coastal climate, and a stainless steel chase cover usually outlasts a galvanized one by a decade or more. We cover every crown repair with a one-year written guarantee, and if anything fails inside that window, we come back at no charge. Call (562) 317-7262 for an exact quote on your chimney.
Hairline cracks can usually be sealed, and moderate wear can be resurfaced. If the crown has large chunks missing, is spalling across most of the surface, or the chase cover has rusted through, replacement is the honest answer. We’ll show you photos and tell you plainly if it can wait or if it needs work now.
Most Gelco crown repairs and chase cover installations take 1 to 2 hours on site. If you need a custom chase cover, we’ll measure the opening on the first visit, order the part, and schedule the install once it arrives, usually within a week.
We stock Gelco-compatible crown sealant, resurfacing material, and standard chase cover sizes on our trucks. If your chimney needs a custom-sized Gelco cover or an exact OEM match, we measure and order it, and you’ll see the exact part cost on your written estimate before you approve anything.
If your Gelco crown is showing cracks, rust, or water damage, call (562) 317-7262 for a free estimate. We’ll give you a written price before any work starts, and the repair is backed by our 365-Day Done Right Promise. Clean flue, honest report, that’s the whole job.
